Trees of Northern Florida

Trees are among the most significant triggers in environmental regulation. Surveyors and Mappers must be able to identify them to comply with wetland regulation and local tree protection ordinances. This course informs attendees of the characteristics and other taxonomic features that aid in proper tree identification. In the afternoon you will travel to a local park to get hands-on experience with tree identification.
Michael Andreu, PhD is an Associate Professor of Forest Systems and has been a member of the UF School of Forest Resources and Conservation faculty since 2005. His educational background includes: a degree in Natural Resources from The University of the South in Sewanee, TN, a Master’s degree in Forest Resource Management from Duke University and a PhD. in Silviculture and Forest Protection from the University of Washington. In addition, Dr. Andreu has worked for various public and private organizations including, The Nature Conservancy, International Paper Company, Larson & McGowin and Eglin Air Force Base. He is involved in research addressing the management of forest ecoystems in an urbanizing landscape as well as investigating restoration ecology, invasive species management, and rare and endangered species.
Chris Demers graduated from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse, NY in 1994 with a BS in Forest Management and earned a Masters in Forest Resources and Conservation from the University of Florida in 1999. He is currently the Forest Stewardship Coordinator at the University of Florida, delivering the educational program for Florida’s Forest Stewardship Program. His previous work history includes forest technician for the University of Florida, U.S. Forest Service and Resource Measurement Services and forestry outpost director for Boy Scouts of America.

This course will focus on Florida Statutes Chapter 177, Part I, Platting. Plat Law was enacted in the legislature in 1971 and has been amended on several occasions since then. This seminar will cover those sets of changes, along with a review of the long standing requirements set forth in the Law.
Patricia “Gail” Oliver, PSM is a Professional Surveyor and Mapper licensed to practice in the State of Florida. She has over thirty years of surveying experience. Currently serving as County Surveyor for St. Johns County, Ms. Oliver oversees the GIS and Survey Divisions. She is a former member of the Florida Board of Surveyors and Mappers, an emeritus member of the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES), a past president of the National Association of County Surveyors, a member of the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS), and the Florida Surveying and Mapping Society (FSMS). She is also a Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) and is a member of the Association of State Floodplain Managers.

This course will cover the various aspects of common law and federal statutory law related to the copyrights which are available for surveying and mapping products. The course will focus on explaining the elements of copyright law and how it applies and can be used for the protection of the surveyor’s or mapper’s work product.
Jessica McGrew, Attorney at Law earned her B.A. in English Literature and International Affairs from Florida State University in 1998, and her M.A. in English from Boston College. She taught literature and writing at Boston College, in the New York City public schools, and in the Dallas County Community College District before resolving to pursue a career in law. In 2007, she graduated cum laude from Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law. She was a member of a law journal and the National Environmental Law Moot Court Team, and her last year of law school she studied at Northwestern University Law School. Jessica McGrew, Attorney at Law clerked for Dallas County Probate Judge Nikki DeShazo and for the City of Chicago Law Department’s Appeals Division. Admitted to the Illinois Bar in 2007, she practiced with a legal aid organization in Chicago before joining a Florida firm in 2009. The Surveyor and Lidar System Technology

This course will explain lidar system technology with specific focus on the role of the traditional surveyor within the process. The course will provide a fundamental understanding of how to specify, assess, analyze and extract deliverable information from lidar system data.
Ted Knaak started his professional career as a control systems analyst for General Electric Space Systems Division through the eighties. In 1990, he moved to Florida where he was exposed to lidar technology at Schwartz Electro Optics serving as marketing/sales and program manager. Mr. Knaak founded RieglUSA in 1993 and has been activiely involved with lidar and laser scanning technology for seventeen years. In 2010, he founded Certainty 3D, a company focused on software and process solutions for the laser scanning industry. He holds MSEE and MSME degrees from Brown and Drexel universities, respectively.

Pablo Ferrari, PSM began his surveying career in 1985 as a Tail Chainman. He has lived in the Jacksonville area for over thirty-six years and is the Vice President/Managing Partner for Geomatics Corporation, with offices located in both St. Augustine and Jacksonville. Mr. Ferrari graduated in 1991 from the University of Florida Surveying and Mapping Program with a Bachelor of Science degree. He holds professional registrations and certifications in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Mr. Ferrari is a past president of FSMS and has also served as the FSMS Secretary and District 2 Director. Mr. Ferrari has been married for over nineteen years and has three children.
New National Datums

This course will discuss and explain the new datums proposed by the National Geodetic Survey (NGS). Topics include: what is a datum and why is it necessary, previous and existing datums and proposed datums.
David Newcomer is a graduate of the University of Michigan with a degree in Civil Engineering and a concentration in Geodesy. He is a licensed Professional Engineer and licensed Professional Land Surveyor in Pennsylvania. Mr. Newcomer has taught numerous seminars and courses on the global positioning system (GPS) including static GPS, real time kinematic GPS and how the GPS system works as well as courses on the use and adjustment of surveying instruments. He has published GPS as a Fast Surveying Tool, (American Society of Civil Engineers: Journal of Surveying Engineering, 1990). Mr. Newcomer is a member of the Florida Surveying and Mapping Society and the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Robert W. Jackson, Jr., PSM is the Fort Lauderdale Director of
Surveying Services at Calvin, Giordano & Associates, Inc. He has approximately forty-four years of experience in all phases of land surveying. He has been a licensed Surveyor since 1985. Mr. Jackson also serves as the City of Weston and the City of West Park FEMA Administrator. He is highly active in professional surveying organizations. He has been an instructor for FSMS for several years and is a Past President. Mr. Jackson has been awarded the Jim Bennett Board Member of the year 2004-2005, has twice been awarded the H.O. Peters Surveyor of the Year in 2005-2006 and 2007-2008, and Fellow Member of the Year 2008-2009.
B. Gregory Rieth, PSM started in the surveying field at what began as a summer job. He was first hired in 1976 to help on a survey crew of J. Patrick Moore, L.L.S. in Corning, New York working on a drainage study. At that time, he thought it was the best job he ever had – making $2.30 per hour. After nine years of surveying in New York, Mr. Rieth moved to Florida. He worked for three firms: DMK Group, Inc., Bishop & Associates, and Landry & Esber before arriving at his present firm Strayer Surveying & Mapping, Inc. in 1996. He has held several positions at the Chapter level of FSMS and has served as District 5 Director and Vice President on the state level.

This class will be an overview of 3D laser scanning for surveying applications. Topics include: an overview of 3D Laser Scanner Hardware and Point Cloud Software, pre-qualification for 3D Laser Scanning, implementing 3D Laser Scanning, and project examples.
Frank J. Hahnel, III has been employed with Leica Geosystems, Inc. for more than ten years as the Accident Investigation Account Manager. His background is in land surveying, where he worked for a major Civil Engineering and Land Surveying company in both Florida and Georgia on a wide variety of projects. This included numerous Florida and Georgia Department of Transportation projects, as well as the generation of 2D and 3D as-built drawings for the Walt Disney World Animal Kingdom construction projects.

This course will focus on the process of acquiring survey data in numerous formats, utilizing G.P.S, Lidar, and traditional survey techniques and then creating Grid and Ground projects within Land Development Desktop.
Patrick B. Meeds, PSM is a licensed Florida Professional Surveyor and Mapper and is a native of South Florida, with over thirty years experience in Surveying and Mapping. He served as a faculty instructor for the A.S. Surveying degree program at Palm Beach Community College. His diverse background includes Horizontal and Vertical Control networks, A.L.T.A. Boundary Surveys, P.L.S.S. Retracement Surveys, Topographic Surveys, Digital Terrain Models, Platting, Right of way mapping, and GIS data applications. Mr. Meeds is the Vice President - Director of Surveys, at Creech Engineers, Inc. He currently serves as District 3 Director for FSMS.
