2006 session legislation

CH 177 CHANGES DEFEATED

We successfully defeated an amendment to the Growth Management Bill that would have removed the requirement to set PRMs prior to plat recordation. The amendment would have allowed PRMs to be set during the bonding period for improvements as is allowed for PCPs.

FSMS put the current requirement to set the PRMs prior to plat recordation into the law in 1996 to put an end to un-monumented subdivisions.

Once again we enjoyed a successful legislative session. As always, Ron Villella made it all look so easy. Thanks Ron!

GEOMATICS FUNDING

The 2006 Legislative Session ended Friday, May 5 capping another winning year for FSMS and the surveying profession. Our primary issue for the session was to obtain $1 Million in funding for our Geomatics program at the University of Florida

I am pleased to report that we were successful in getting the full amount funded. Senator J.D. Alexander was instrumental in winning this important funding. Past President John Clyatt, Ron Villella, UF Lobbyist Cindy Littlejohn and Dr. Tim White all worked hard to make it happen and our thanks go to them. I also want to thank each of you who took the time to let your legislators know how important this funding is to the future of the surveying profession.

The funding will establish satellite degree programs at three locations – Ft. Lauderdale, Plant City and Milton. Students in these programs will get an Associate of Arts degree from a community college or regional university, then transfer to UF and attend classes at one of the satellites.

In addition to allowing place-bound students to get a Geomatics degree, transfer students find easier entry into UF. As a transfer student with an AA degree a 2.5 GPA is all that is required for entry into UF.

The UF Geomatics Advisory Committee, made up of practicing surveyors (including many FSMS past presidents), is working with the Geomatics faculty to launch the satellite campuses. The first is expected to begin teaching in January 2007.
